Miyazaki's Latest Coming-of-Age Fantasy Inspires Exploration of New Stories

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki shared exciting details about Hayao Miyazaki's next project. Suzuki revealed that Miyazaki's upcoming film, The Boy and the Heron, has given the acclaimed filmmaker a "newfound confidence" to continue exploring other stories.

Next Project Still a Mystery

While fans eagerly await Miyazaki's next masterpiece, Suzuki confirmed that the director has not yet figured out the story for his next project. Miyazaki's focus is currently on The Boy and the Heron, which is set to release in U.S. theaters soon. According to Suzuki, Miyazaki needs to "empty his mind again" before coming up with new ideas for his next venture.

Highly Anticipated U.S. Release

After its successful theatrical run in Japan in July 2023, The Boy and the Heron (originally titled How Do You Live?) is finally making its debut in U.S. theaters on December 8. North American distribution will be handled by GKIDS. The film recently had its international premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received rave reviews from critics.

A Magical Journey

The film follows the psychological development of a teenage boy through his encounters with friends and his uncle. After discovering an abandoned tower in his new town, he enters a magical world with a talking grey heron. The synopsis promises an enchanting coming-of-age fantasy.
